The history of Bodega Contador begins in 1995, when the oenologist and winemaker Benjamín Romeo acquires a centennial cave under the castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra (La Rioja). In 1996, he made the first harvest of his wine "La Cueva del Contador" and began to buy vineyards for his winemaking project.

The key to the work at Bodega Contador is the meticulous attention to a wealth of details at all stages of the production process: from the care of the vineyard flooring to the design of the labels. Benjamin Romeo personally supervises all these tasks.

In 1996, he made the first harvest of his wine "La Cueva del Contador" and began to buy vineyards for his winemaking project.

The key to the work at Bodega Contador is the meticulous attention to a wealth of details at all stages of the production process: from the care of the vineyard flooring to the design of the labels. Benjamin Romeo personally supervises all these tasks.

During the following years, it carries out minimum scale vinification in the cave and continues acquiring vineyards. In 1999, he made the first vintage of his wine "Contador".

In 2000, after seeing the success of the market and specialized media in these first wines, Benjamín decided to dedicate himself exclusively to his personal project.

During 2001, Benjamín Romeo refurbished the garage of his parents' house in San Vicente to make wine. In this way, the winemaking capacity of the cave is increased.

The magazine of the American critic Robert Parker awards the highest rating (100 points) to the 2004 and 2005 harvests of "Contador", made in the garage. This recognition, unprecedented in Spain, boosts the brand's international prestige.

Between 2004 and 2006, Benjamín Romeo drafted the project for his current winery together with architect Héctor Herrera. The work is executed between 2006 and 2008.
The new winery is inaugurated on 21 June 2008, coinciding with the summer solstice. The building is located at the foot of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in the centre of the territory occupied by the various vineyards of the property.

The structure on three floors or terraces of the winery reproduces the original slopes of the land and at the same time facilitates the handling of grapes and wine by gravity.

The terraces of the building are covered with plants that integrate with the native vegetation. The cellar has exposed concrete walls, so that it becomes impregnated with dust and ends up being confused with the soil from which it was born.
