Matthew Gloag & Son Ltd., like many of the pioneers distilleries, has its origins in the nineteenth century, when the founder established himself as a grocer and wine merchant in Perth. Matthew Gloag bought malt whiskeys and distilleries throughout Scotland gained a reputation for its wineries. When Queen Victoria visited the city in 1842, he commissioned Matthew Gloag supply wines for the royal banquet. In 1860 his son William took over the company and began to add blended to the wide variety of beverages offered by the company whiskeys, and then in 1896, William's son, another Matthew Gloag, who had worked in the wine trade in Bordeaux, took over the business. He created a blend in 1897 whose first name was the Grouse brand. He became so well known around Perth that the name was therefore changed, The Famous Grouse. The company was still owned by the Gloag family, but in 1970 Frederick died Matthew Gloag (the President) and his wife, and the family was affected by the penalties of the rights of succession. A friendly buyer was sought to secure the future of the company, and the obvious choice was Highland Distilleries, whom Matthew Gloag had bought many of their whiskeys. Highlands have the resources to promote The Famous Grouse, and conditions favored. Under the able leadership of John Macphail, and aiming to be market leaders in Scotland, the brand doubled its sales in the domestic market during the decade (about one million cases), and achieved the same performance abroad during the 80s it has been the best-selling brand blend whiskey in Scotland since 1980.
